One of the biggest questions we receive as home educators is, “What about socialization”. Then when we answer their question, people are amazed at how much “social” time our students actually have. But is it really socializing our kids if they are busy in a class? First we have our homeschool co-op then they have music lessons, martial arts, sports, art class, etc., etc. and etc. But when is the time for fun? When do we allow our children and ourselves to enjoy our friends? It seems the stigma of being “unsocialized homeschoolers” has pushed us to the other extreme: Too busy doing “things”.
We need to, as the saying goes, “stop and smell the roses”. Time is short. Our children are with us for a minimal amount of time. I am learning to say no to obligations and yes to living life. Maybe we should put “Smelling Roses” on our calendars and to-do lists.
